Join us for an immersive journey to the vibrant and little known world of “Maracatu” with the award winning film Azougue Nazaré, followed by a rich cultural performance by Maracatu Ubuntu group and  an explosive set from DJ Astronafrica celebrating our Afro Latino roots.

Film: Azougue Nazaré

In a vast, seemingly endless cane field, the sugarcane dances to the wind, like sea waves. Pai Nani, an Afro-Brazilian spiritual leader, carries out a religious act with five caboclos de lança – costumed dancers of the Maracatu Rural. As the caboclos acquire supernatural powers, they embody entities and disappear. The city of Nazaré da Mata witnesses mysterious events. The population is startled with the ravaging supernatural phenomena.

The night will showcase the different cultural expressions of the Maracatu. Following the film, the night welcomes Sydney’s own Maracatu Ubuntu group, a Brazilian percussion group that rescues the rich aspects of Brazilian music, tradition and cultural performance.

To close off the night, Unidos de Sydney and Bateria 61 Grupo De Samba are bringing Rio Carnaval to Marrickville!  Unidos De Sydney Samba School is a non-profit project bringing together samba drummers, samba dancers, musicians, artists, costume makers and more to provide an opportunity for the residents of Sydney to experience the passion, energy and creativity of Brazilian Arts through Samba.

Featuring a Caipirinha bar and traditional Brazilian food available for purchase.
You don’t want to miss this!

Your support on the night will help raise funds for the 14th Sydney Latin American Film Festival.
