Miriam Lies / Miriam Miente
Race and class tensions in the Dominican Republic are given deft and perceptive treatment in this charming coming-of-age film from Natalia Cabral and Oriol Estrada.
Afro-Latina teenager Miriam must deal with her white mother’s anxieties about race and class as she prepares for her 15th birthday celebrations. As elaborate party preparations are underway, Miriam must decide whether to tell her family that the new boyfriend she met online and invited to the party as her dance partner is actually black.
Miriam Lies is a sensitive examination of the deeply entrenched racism, classism and ‘whitewashing’ that continues to pervade Latin America, and provides a rare and touching glimpse into the lives of young people of mixed cultural heritage.
