Adapted from the acclaimed graphic novel by Colombian-Ecuadorian cartoonist Powerpaola, Virus Tropical begins on the night Paola is conceived, setting the tone for the film’s matter-of-fact exploration of sexuality and family.

Over the years we accompany Paola, the youngest of three daughters raised by a mostly single mother, as she fumbles her way through friendships, new schools, clunky romances, and various domestic dramas in her quest to become an independent, creative young woman. This black and white animation has a refreshing perspective, indie score and idiosyncratic charm.

Contains frank depictions of nudity, sex, childbirth, and recreational drug use.
