Wandering Girl/ Niña Errante
In this multi-award-winning film, director Rubén Mendoza takes us on a cross-country journey that is both literal and metaphorical.
Recently orphaned Angela (portrayed by newcomer Sofia Paz Jara) meets her three older half-sisters for the first time at their father’s funeral. Fearing the 12-year-old will go into state care, Angela’s siblings take her on a 900-mile journey across Colombia to live with an aunt she has never met. Along the way, Angela gets a crash course on womanhood as the sisters share confidences, intimacies, grudges and life lessons.
With a majority female crew and cast, this lyrical and poetic film subtly explores contemporary themes of femininity and feminism, underpinned by a mesmerising vocal score by female duo Las Anez, Wandering Girl was the first Latin American film to win the Golden Wolf for Best Film when it premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in 2018, where it also won the Best Music award.
